James L. Overton

People and their stories have always been the cornerstone of James Overton’s career. A journalist and television producer for more than three decades, Overton’s career has literally taken him from the heart of the nation’s capital to the eye of the storm. His accomplishments include a distinguished experience in print and broadcast journalism, public affairs, media relations, marketing, and real estate.

With his experience in Washington, DC, working as a journalist covering national news and as a congressional press secretary and speechwriter, Mr. Overton brings a unique skills set to American Homecoming Foundation.

As a writer and producer for ABC News’ “World News This Morning” and “Good Morning America” in the 1980s and early 1990s, Overton wrote copy and scripts for national anchors. He also produced daily news pieces and as well as editorial supervising ABC’s national correspondents in Washington, DC.

At United Press International during the 1970s he reported and edited general news, politics, state and federal courts, science and medicine, the space program and the lively arts. As a UPI desk editor in Washington, DC, Mr. Overton assisted in coverage of the White House, Congress, and the federal government.

In the US Congress, Mr. Overton served as press secretary for Sen. Malcolm Wallop (R-Wyoming) and later Rep. Tom Loeffler, (R-Texas) where he handled media inquiries, developed news releases, editorial columns, speeches and radio and television segments, as well as assisting in formulating public policy through legislation.

In the private sector he has lobbied trade and transportation issues before Congress, analyzed legislative and policy developments for corporate clients and produced marketing videos for a global real estate investment firm. He has been a New Mexico real estate broker in Santa Fe since 1998.

Overton also taught Broadcast News at the University of New Mexico. He was an officer in the 71st
Airborne Brigade of the Texas Army National Guard during the Vietnam era.
